Three Video Games That Should Be Made Into Movies [MUO Gaming]

Video games and movies are two pieces of entertainment that never seem to combine well. A great movie made into a video game always ends up being terrible, and a great game made into a movie never seems to come out much better. Some video game movies were decent, like Mortal Kombat and Hitman, but none were a classic in terms of blockbuster and critical success. The movie to game side is even worse. Look at Street Fighter: The Movie, the Game. That is right, it was a game based on a movie based on a game. Ridiculous, I know.
All that said, just because so many of the previous video game and movie tie-ins have been terrible, it doesn’t mean there are not some games out there that could make great movies if they were done correctly. In fact, a few easily could make fantastic movies. With a little love and care, the games on this list could make blockbuster and critical successes, and show gamers that just because a game is being made into a movie, it does not always have to be a flaming pile of garbage.
The Legend of Zelda
The legend of Zelda would make a perfect movie. It features the classic boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl is kidnapped and needs rescuing. In fact, there was even a practical joke for April Fool’s Day a few years ago by IGN about a Zelda movie. The trailer for the imaginary movie looked awesome, especially for something put together as a joke by a video game website. I can only imagine how amazing it would look if it was done by a professional movie studio with a big budget.
Zelda has everything you need to make a fantastic movie. It features an interesting story, with a lot of action and even some romance. On top of that, it features a certain intangible that many other video games do not. They have a dedicated, hardcore following of gamers that actually want to see a Zelda movie.

The one drawback the Zelda movie might run into is figuring out how to handle Link, the main character. It is tough to make a movie where the main character does not speak. I am sure there are ways to work around this; it will just take the right creative minded team to get it done.
Bioshock
The original Bioshock game was the ultimate sleeper hit. It was not hyped up for a year before its release like so many other games. Bioshock was one of those rare cases where review scores and word of mouth from journalists actually caused a game to become a smashing success.

The reason everyone loved Bioshock was the incredible environments and the interesting story. This is why it lends itself so perfectly to becoming a movie.

Imagine the dark gritty world of Rapture, as a Big Daddy lumbers down a steamy corridor right towards our unfortunate hero. Now, imagine this on a giant screen in a movie theater with surround sound. Bioshock has all the parts in place to make an incredible movie. All someone has to do is put the pieces together, and when they do, we will be in for a movie-watching treat.
Metal Gear Solid
In many ways, Metal Gear plays a lot like a movie already. The cut scenes in Metal Gear can be extremely long. In Metal Gear Solid 4 specifically, I remember sitting through individual cut scenes that were as long as an episode of a television show. A game like this seems tailormade for a movie. It has over the top action, an insane story that has more twists and turns than a roller coaster, and a cast of characters that complement each other in such an entertaining way.

The characters are what really makes Metal Gear shine, and conveniently enough, characters are one of the main things that make a movie worth watching. Obviously, to make Metal Gear work as a movie they would have to trim things up a little, or it would be one incredibly long movie. This should not be a problem, since many of the cut scenes in Metal Gear are longer than they need to be, and could be cut up nicely.

Another reason Metal Gear would shine as a movie is that there are four of them, and the movie industry is incredibly sequel driven. Four Metal Gear movies will bring four times the profit, and movie companies obviously love profit.
Conclusion
These are three examples of video games that could be made into movies that would actually not be garbage. In fact, they might even be great movies. Time will tell if the license holders ever allow their properties to be made into movie form. If they do, we could be in for some great movies, and proof that it is possible to cross-pollinate movies and games in such a way that it is not just a cheap cash-in.
What games do you think could cross into the movie space and be awesome? Do you think it is impossible to make a good video game movie? Let us know in the comments!
