Web design and development requires a variety of specialist skills, not only technical and creative skills, but also project management, interaction design, usability and many more. When you are choosing a web designer it is important to know what are the best questions to ask, this makes it much easer to decide which designer to go with. The following are some of the most important questions to ask your web designer.
What skills do you have?
Most website creators a stronger in either technical skills or creative design. Developers are more skilled at a variety of backend languages such mysql, php, and Ruby on rails. Designers are more skilled in the creative software packages such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. Depending on the type of website you will need to consider if your site will be stronger in functionality, or have strength in its design. You are more likely to have strength in all aspects of web design if you choose a team, such as a web design agency.
What experience do you have?
In web design, experience counts a lot more than qualifications. You can be confident that you will have much stronger results, the more experienced your web designer is. Having a good working knowledge of web design requires extensive experience because the knowledge required is vast and the only way to confidently produce consistently good results is with a strong history of practical application.
Will I be able to make changes to my website?
The strong trend is now towards content management systems (cms), which allow users to make changes to their websites. Popular cms systems are open source options, such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal and Magento. The lower cost option would be to not use a cms, but unless you are good with html, you will need to contact you designer every time you want to make a change to your website. Ask your web designer if they create websites using a cms and which one they are recommend. A good web developer will be able to recommend which cms is best for your requirements.
What support is provided?
Even if your web designer creates your website with a cms, you may still require support. You may have questions about how to use the cms, you may need to make some small tweaks or you may require more complex changes. Some designers will provide a certain amount of free support and then charge after that. Others may provide a different package. Find out what the rates are for ongoing support and maintenance.
Can I see your portfolio?
Viewing your designer’s portfolio will give you a good idea of the designer’s skill level and if they have made sites which match the look and feel of the website you are looking to create. Many designers focus on a particular niche or specific look and feel. For example some designers focus only on real estate websites, and other designers have a particular strength in using textures. A team of designers at a web design agency is more likely to have strength across all industries, based of their varied experience.
Do you offer e-commerce?
E-commerce websites are becoming ubiquitous. In fact, some predict that it will overtake the retail industry. If you are creating an online shop, ask what kind of experience your web designer has in e-commerce website. There are a number of options for ecommerce software. A recommended option is Magento, which is an open source solution. It is a fully featured ecommerce solution, which is very powerful and flexible. There are many ecommerce solutions around, so ask your web designer which solution fits the needs of your website.
What is the procedure, what process is involved and how long will it take?
Different designers have different approaches when it comes to the web design process. The process should be clear and involve the client at each step of the process. Typically the process will begin with a discovery phase, in which requirements are discussed and initial research and planning is conducted. Then the site structure is determined. The visual design is then created. The site is then implemented and tested. Once this is complete, the site is launched. The client should involved throughout the whole process. It should be made clear if there is a deadline involved and what time frame the designer would estimate the project will take for each stage of the process.
How does the payment structure work?
Web design companies may differ in their approach to the structure of payments. Payments will structure according to a payment plans, and are typically divided into 2, 3 or 4 payments. They would be divided into milestones throughout the project. This payment plan should be agreed to at the beginning of the project.
