I don’t know much about where you are, but the weather here in the UK has taken a decidedly wet turn and the prospect of doing anything in our mud-bath of a garden is just ridiculous.
Therefore, I suggest you devote some time to playing either the free-to-play Age of Empires Online that was released a few weeks ago, or load your iPad up with these little gems and stay in bed.
Roads of Rome HD Free (Demo) [iTunes]:

This is a difficult game to describe, but my best effort would be to class it as an on-rails strategy game. Essentially, you click to perform various tasks around camp, such as harvesting materials or building structures. Each level has a time limit, and the ultimate goal of each level is to continue building the road that Caesar ordered.
Though the tutorial levels start off slow, the game shows it’s true self around level 3. The demo ends at level 5, but that should be enough to show if you really like the game or not. It reminded me a lot of Settlers or Age of Empires, and if I wasn’t playing the latter right now I’d probably unlock the full game ($2.99).
Japan Life [iTunes]:

Having lived and worked in Japan for 8 years, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from this, but the concept sounded pleasing enough. It’s a classic ‘free-mium’ game of building a Japanese tourist attraction – temples, traditional hotels, and some cherry blossoms. Like anything Japanese, it’s excruciatingly cute – and you even get little stereotypical “gyaru” (black make up, dyed blond hair) Japanese girls wandering around your park.
If you’re fan of these kind of ‘free-mium’ games, you’re certainly going to like this. The game lasted a good 15-20 minutes before I finally hit a plateau of having to wait around for more coins, but that might also be my fault for doing it my own way instead of following the tutorial.
Mushroom Fantasy [iTunes]:

First off, the music in this game is absolutely insane. If techno gets on your nerves, do NOT go within 100 meters of this game, it will do your head in. The trippy techno-beats had a curious energizing effect on me though, which was all the more frustrating because I utterly sucked at the core mechanics of the game.
It’s nothing unique – move crystals to align them and blow them up, and more fall into place – but then there’s the MUSIC! I think the game is titled for the emotional state it puts your mind in rather than any theming involved, so if you’re after a “legal high” you might just find it in this game! Go on, I dare you.
Shoot To Kill – Free as Hell [iTunes]:

A simple point to click shooter, as ‘demons’ come at you from all around. Shoot, reload, shoot some more, do it all again. It’s hardly ground-breaking, and certainly doesn’t introduce any wildly innovative features above and beyond the basics, but it’s still going to amuse you for a good half hour or so, I think.
Pee Pee Boy [iTunes]:

You’ve got to joking right? Apparently not, Pee Pee Boy is a real game about helping a young boy to pee without getting it all down himself or getting it trapped when the toilet seat falls. There isn’t much more to it than that, but it’s honestly quite amusing and the graphic style and sound effects are just lovely. Not for the prudish among you.
See if you can beat my wife’s high score of 9.34 liters!
I think I covered something for every kind of gamer this week, what do you think? Let us know in the comments if you really enjoyed any of these free iPad games or decided to purchase full versions. Also, I’m always on the look out for more great free games, so feel free to recommend your favourite so I can check out and include it in the list next time.
Don’t forget, we have a page full of the best iPad apps now too, and an iPhone selection as well, so be sure to check those out if you haven’t already.
You can also check out all the previous iPad games round-ups here, or that little widget thing at the bottom of the page.
