Facebook Chat has become an important tool for keeping in touch with friends. In fact, I would go so far as to say that in comparison to the other features on Facebook (news feed, photo albums, etc.) I think Facebook Chat is vastly underrated.
But…you know what you and I – and most of the people we know – have in common? We all hate how Facebook has been messing with our chat setup. First, they made the chat bar a permanent fixture on the right side of my screen. Then they messed with the people I had listed there, only showing me my “top connections” who may or may not be online. Currently, I can scroll down to see “more friends online”, but it still feels like a work in progress.
I understand why Facebook is doing this. Chat is becoming the primary way we IM our friends, and having those conversations keeps us on the site longer, so keeping the chat open and displaying our top connections, theoretically, should increase our chat time, et cetera, et cetera. But I would still like to be able to see everyone in one place. Who’s with me?
What Is fTalk?
fTalk is a standalone desktop chat client for Facebook. It’s fast, accessible, free, and it notifies you when friends come online. You can also update your status right from the app, so you can post and interact with friends without so much as even attempting to open your browser and visit Facebook.

Here’s what I really like about fTalk – it was designed to make it easier for you and I to keep in touch with our friends. And, “if you would like to send in ideas for new features, or any other requests or comments, [they'd] be happy to hear from you – [they] read every message [they] get.” Now that’s what I’m talking about.
According to their website, fTalk started out as just a simple messenger application, but has since become rather popular thanks to the inclusion of new features being added regularly.
What Can I Do With fTalk?
As a chat client, fTalk has a pretty clean interface. When one of your contacts comes online, you will see a system tray notification about it, and once you have the client open you’ll notice that your online and offline contacts are separately aligned (just the way we like it).

When you first install the app, you will obviously need to enter your Facebook credentials to sign in, which will take you to the authorization page in your browser. Once logged into Facebook Chat, you can double click your friends’ names to initiate a conversation.

You can also view friends’ profiles, photos, and Facebook messages (on your default browser) through options located on your chat window. You can also update your status from the text box located above the search bar.
Conclusion
I’m excited about this app. It has a very minimalist feel to it and is pretty clean. I’m looking forward to seeing future progress and updates with it.
