Infographics and data visualizations are shifting the way people view information. They help communicate complex ideas in a clear, visually stimulating way, which helps us take in information more easily. I’m a big fan of infographics and their ability to visually represent fascinating data. While they can be powerful visualizations, they often act to educate others on something they may not be aware of, like how many tweets are sent in a given day (~140 million), or how many pieces of Facebook content we post (~1.5 billion per day).

Every once in a while you may come across a brilliant infographic that you found useful or visually appealing, but if you would like to find them more consistently, I suggest you check out Visual.ly.

What Is Visual.ly?

Visual.ly (directory app) is a place where you can both explore the best data visualizations on the web and upload some of your own. Visual.ly is currently home to over 2,700 visualizations, and there is something there for everyone.

Business, Lifestyle, Sports, Economy, Transportation, Geography, and Social Media are just a few of the many tags/categories that Visual.ly has to offer, and the numbers are growing every day.

As a designer, Visual.ly can be a great way to promote your work, as it has already built its reputation due to top designers uploading their work to the site.

To learn more about what Visual.ly is, check out this interesting video:

Can I Upload My Own Infographics To Visual.ly?

Design much? If you’d like to get your infographics much more exposure, head over to Visual.ly’s homepage and create an account. You’ll be asked for a username, email address, password, and website (optional), which takes all of a few seconds to fill out.

Once you have an account, you’ll be taken back to the homepage, where you can ‘View the Showcase‘ of visualizations that have already been submitted, ‘Submit visualization‘ (meaning upload your own designs), or ‘Visit the Labs‘ where you can see Visual.ly’s latest visualization tools.

If you click the ‘Submit visualization‘ button, you will be walked through a series of steps to upload your own work of art. On the first screen, you can browse for or drag & drop an image in to get started. This image will be used to create a thumbnail that is displayed on Visual.ly for all to see. JPG, JPEG, GIF, and PNG are all accepted image formats.

Next, you’ll create the thumbnail view from the image you’ve just uploaded. Then you are asked to provide some information about your visualization, like the title, appropriate tags, and a description.

When you’re finished, your visualization will live on its own page where it can be easily seen, shared, commented on, and ranked by others. If it’s good, you should gain a lot more exposure than, say, posting it on a blog that only your mother reads.

Conclusion

As a bonus, Visual.ly also offers a way for you to “Twitterize Yourself”, which you can find here. The Twitter Visualizer generates a personalized infographic of your Twitter persona based on what you tweet.

Whether you design infographics or are just as into them as I am, you should find Visual.ly to be a very useful resource. You’ll find that if you spend a lot of time on the site you’ll begin to get smarter, too.

Are you into data visualizations and infographics?  What are your favorites?
