If you work at your Mac throughout the day, you no doubt perform countless clicks with your mouse or trackpad. Unless you’re a heavy keyboard shortcut user, you probably spend lots of time clicking to open applications, close windows, download webpages, play music tracks, open emails, and even put your computer to sleep. You perform hundreds of clicks per day, and often it may become annoying.
I recently discovered a little application called DwellClick, developed by Nick Moore, which performs the clicking action of your mouse or trackpad for you. When I first read about DwellClick, it was difficult to imagine exactly how it worked, until I downloaded it and gave it a try. I’ve been using DwellClick for nearly a month now, and with the various tasks I perform on a daily basis, DwellClick actually seems to boost my productivity. But more importantly, it reduces the amount of tapping I do on my Magic Trackpad.
This week, we’ve got 25 copies of DwellClick to give away. Find out more about DwellClick and how to join the giveaway below.

DwellClick ($15.99 on the Mac App Store) is primarily an advanced application for Mac power users. That’s not to say it can’t be used by Mac newbies. It just means you will need to be very comfortable with intentionally moving your mouse and letting DwellClick perform clicking actions for you. With DwellClick, it’s almost like you’re clicking without your fingers at all.
The DwellClick site includes a very handy tutorial on how to use the application, which starts working right out of the box, so to speak.
Preferences Adjustments
Click Delay
The key to getting comfortable with DwellClick is to make adjustments in the application’s Preferences. You may first want to adjust the speed of the Click Delay. The default setting is a good place to start and practice, but you may find that the click delay is too slow or a little too fast.

Sound Effects & Animations
By default, DwellClick is set up to perform an actual clicking sound and animation when you rest your cursor on a clickable item. This is very useful for when you first start using DwellClick, but the Mac power user in you may not need this feature.

I actually found that turning off this audio and visual feedback seemed to speed up the clicking.
Excluding Apps
You can disable DwellClick for applications in which you find it gets in the way of what you need to do.

Advanced Settings
DwellClick has a few other Preferences settings you will want to pay attention to. It includes a Pop-up panel feature that enables you to perform double clicks, drags, and control-clicking. When you place your cursor on an item, you press the Fn key to activate the pop-up panel.
The only occasion in which I use this feature is when I’m doing selective screenshots on my desktop. I find that if I don’t hold down the Fn key, DwellClick will mistakingly click before I take the shot. You can still perform these special clicks without using the pop-up feature.
Notice also that when you rest your cursor on a scroll bar, the toolbar of an open window, or on a resize handle, DwellClick will automatically perform the action of you holding down your main mouse button so that you can perform, scroll, drag or resize a selected window.

If you use a Multi-touch Trackpad, pay particular attention to how DwellClick performs for you when your fingers on are on the trackpad. To gain better control, I chose to prevent DwellClick from clicking when my finger is on the trackpad. So basically, I can move the cursor to where I want to click, slightly raise my finger, and the clicking action takes place. You may be comfortable and precise enough in your use of the trackpad to allow DwellClick to immediately perform a click where you move the mouse to a designated clickable item.

There are a few other advanced settings you will want to try out with DwellClick to see how it works best for you. You will want to, for example, assign a keyboard shortcut to turn DwellClick on and off for those occasions when you find it’s getting in the way of performing some difficult tasks.
DwellClick won’t totally prevent you from clicking with your mouse or trackpad, but it will certainly reduce the amount of annoying clicking you do everyday.
Give DwellClick a try and let us know how it works for you. If by any chance you don’t win one of the promotion codes, you can download DwellClick for a 30-day free trial, and if you like it, simply purchase it from the Mac App Store for $15.99.
