Yet another week has passed and it’s time again for Sound Sunday. In this edition you’ll find quite a bit of variation, including a remix album of The Chemical Brothers’ record Further, a tribute album to Nirvana’s Nevermind, and a mix of genres including pop, rock, soul, hip hop, ambient, electronic, and an idea of punk.

Crushing Blows – selftitled
Genre: experimental, psychedelic, indie, pop, punk
Crushing Blows is UK formed by Chris Jones and Andrew Foster in June 2008. They played their first concert on New Year’s Even 2009 and have released two albums. The selftitled record was recorded between June and November 2010.

Saints of Valory – Mixtape
Genre: indie, pop, rock
Austin, TX is a hotbed for musical creation and discovery. Plenty of international artists relocate to Austin, but Saints of Valory have an interesting melting pot of a lineup. Lead singer Gavin Jasper is Brazilian, Frenchman Gerard Bouvier pounds the drums and keyboardist Stephen Buckle is Canadian. Godfrey Thomson, on guitar, is the only dude from the US of A. For a band whose members hail from all over the globe, the style here is straightforward. Sugary guitar and key harmonies populate the group’s five-song Neon Eyes EP. The production is solid, the hooks are there and Jasper’s voice is somewhat reminiscent of Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Morpion – Headcleaner
Genre: ambient, electronica, downtempo, glitch

From the album introduction: “Morpion brings an intriguing and unique edge to the IDM side of things, combining various electronic styles into something universal. “Headcleaner” appeals to both the glitch and ambient lovers, and its arsenal of downtempo and dub influenced layers inflate the album into a well-rounded embodiment of music.”

FurtherRemixed – The Album
Genre: electronica, dance, progressive, breakbeat, house, remix
Further is an album of The Chemical Brothers. FurtherRemixed is a remix project initiated by fans of the band. From FurtherRemixed.org: “FurtherRemixed is a fully fledged remix album of Further, not only putting a great new take on every track but compounding them together, creating a non-stop sonic experience not unlike the original. It also goes beyond the music with special booklets and exclusive artwork, representing the Further era in both words and pictures.”

Chrome Sparks – My <3
Genre: indie, electronic
Chrome Sparks is the project of 20-something university student Jeremy Malvin of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He describes himself as a claustrophobic procrastinator with a bad taste in cereals. If anything, these characteristics appear to benefit the music.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & Ayah – Back For More
Genre: rhythm & blues, soul, hip hop
From the official album introduction: “DJ Jazzy Jeff, along with contributions from well-known producers James Poyser, Pete Kuzma and Démien DeSandies, has created an experience that music lovers have long awaited. Yet, those not as well versed in the genre will appreciate these soulful treats just the same. We are already familiar with the success of Jeff’s past work with heavy-hitters Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild and Floetry. And his work with the Toronto songbird, Ayah, will be no exception.”

Amanda Diva – Madame Monochrome
Genre: soul, beats, hip hop
From the album introduction on Bandcamp: “Somehow between being a music expert and comedian for VH1, DJaying, preparing for her next art exhibit, hosting “Speaking Of…” on Music Choice, developing a TV show based on her comedy produced by Nick Cannon, and speaking at colleges across the nation, Deev found time to get in the studio work and with Ski Beatz, James Poyser, Droop E, Cook Classics and more to make some bottom line, dopeness. Though she was busy with other projects, it was her frustration with America’s obsession with image over artistry and money over musicality that made her decide to put music to the side. But a recent trip to Europe to perform in Berlin and Paris showed her that there is still a world that appreciates true artistry! Renewed, she came back to the states, got back on the mic, and found her way to “Madame Monochrome”.”

The Wooden Birds – NoiseTrade Sampler

From their NoiseTrade introduction: “Andrew Kenny, the driving force behind American Analog Set, began working on a new side project, The Wooden Birds, after pulling up stakes and moving back to his native Texas in 2008. Sounding something like a rustic, Neil Young-influenced spin on Kenny’s previous work, The Wooden Birds nodded to likeminded acts like Bon Iver and Iron & Wine.”

Hey Rosetta! – XM The Verge Session
Genre: alternative, indie, pop
From their NoiseTrace introduction: “Hey Rosetta! hails from the rocky and cold northeastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. In 2005, Tim Baker arrived home from a road trip with a suitcase full of poems and melodies. Hey Rosetta! was formed soon after with the addition of a string section (cellist Romesh Thavanathan and violinist Kinley Dowling) and rhythm section (bassist Josh Ward, drummer Phil Maloney, and guitarist Adam Hogan).”
All proceeds will be donated to USC Canada, with the mission to promote vibrant family farms, strong rural communities, and healthy ecosystems around the world.
