All my posts regarding the subject of freelancing are based on the idea that 99% of the workers aren’t content with their superiors and a part of this percentage almost hates the idea of having a boss. Freelancing is a solution to escape from having a boss and taking your life in your own hands; from outside of this niche it seems that any freelancer is a lucky person: no chief, own schedule, working only on interesting projects. Is this true or a dream? Personally, I consider it a dream, only very few freelancers could do whatever they want whenever they want; there is nothing 100% bad or good; usually these numbers vary according to the perspective of the viewer.

A strong challenge for any freelancer is his schedule, it should solve many difficult aspects such as: the interval of working, the recreation, the learning process and the hours spent and so on. An analysis of these factors may reveal to the readers some interesting considerations and may help them improve the manner of work; it will be the ultimate reward for me to know that this post really helped someone.

1.When to work

clip_image002

There are two kinds of freelancers: – full-time, the people who totally abandoned working for a corporation; – part-time, the category of people who have a stable job, usually with a reduced number of working hours, but in their “free time” work as freelancers. This classification is very important when it comes about the most important part of the schedule: the period of work. Unfortunately, the part-time freelancers can’t have fully control over their schedule; usually it depends on the “stable” job. Before writing this post, I searched for interviews of the best freelancers, but I also wanted to see the mentality of the amateur people who try to become freelancers.

I believed that reading tons of interviews will lead me to the discovery of a common behavior of freelancers and I could share it with the readers…false! People are different so logically all the freelancers are different. The working time of a freelancer varies; some are waking up in the morning and after a cup of coffee start working with small breaks for dinner or a snack. Another part of them prefer sleeping lately and working until midnight and after. Overall, when you work it isn’t very important, it is a problem for statistics; the real problem is how to work and how to be more efficient.

The best freelancers, according to the interviews when they are talking free, emphasis that is required full focus on the project and all the rest must be neglected in order to do a good job. The attention must be canalized only to work and nothing more. This is the main conclusion of this subtitle and its major role makes me believe that it is the base of a healthy development: it doesn’t matter when you work; it is important how efficient you are.

2.How to work

clip_image004

The dream of making your job duties from home may turn against you in the case of a very confortable person. Having none to push you to work, step-by-step the laziness becomes a rule and the finances are going down. To avoid these there are two major solutions:

#1. Working from home, but respecting a schedule and your family must let you alone; it is nice but dangerous to interact with your kids or wife/husband because the efficiency is almost or even zero. It is ok to say to your family members that you are working, but in the next room and you need decent condition to practice, it implies the support of the family but personally, I see it the best solution.

#2. Working from various places, it is also a decent solution. Firstly, you may work from a rented office or into one when others work for a company and you work on your own (obviously, paying a rent). This fact doesn’t forbid you to go to some other “exotic” places as: into the park, at a coffee corner, where you may benefit from wireless Internet, the library and so on. The changing of the location is the best remedy against boredom; you might be very creative in these circumstances. Here is the conclusion: experiment all the places and try to evaluate if these are ok, talk to your family and let them know that when you stay in the bedroom with your laptop you WORK and need some decent conditions.

Chose a best web hosting provider and create your own online work environment, so it doesn’t matter from where you work. You just need internet connection to go online. Plus, it’s really nice to go “mobile” during work.

3. For whom to work

clip_image006

Definitely, anyone is more productive when the work is liked and all is a hell when the project taken isn’t something attractive or the client is too exigent. The agenda of a freelancer must be elaborated, taken into account this fact. Practically, it is simple: take any project you consider interesting and the client is “bearable” as far as you are able to respect the deadlines and try to refuse what you don’t like. The disliked ones will take more time, effort, and resources so it isn’t a profitable solution. Unfortunately, few people can really accept or give up projects; the experienced and the talented ones are doing this selection. In a nutshell, try to work on what you like and may be finished without extra efforts and accept difficult clients and boring projects when lacking the money or the recompense for it is very motivational.

4. The way to success: the self-evaluation

clip_image008

I try in all my posts to give relevant tips, which once applied improvements would be easily noticed. When it is about web design and development it is simple, i.e here you must use sans serif fonts in your huge header, the reader will do it and the readability of the content is increased…cool, isn’t it? When we are talking about human beings, the certitude is replaced with possibilities; I can’t be sure about anything because we all are different. The advices from above are working for the majority of us but don’t worry if these aren’t an improvement for you, this means that you are special.

Doing constant research is also something that needs to be done if you wanted to show off your innovative skills in what you are offering as a freelancer. Go out with your fellow colleagues, travel, or checking out the latest offers from other web design and hosting companies can level up your knowledge and can also serve as your “value-added features”on your portfolio.

In spite of that, there is something, which apparently is functional for everyone: the objective self-evaluation. Please, to be successful, always try to see your improvements and the ways to efficiency, experiment and evaluate, this is the winning strategy. You may work better under pressure than worriless, one time experiment it and if it really works, then find a source of pressure! I really hope to do it and once the first results are coming to surface, please let me know, it will be a great reward to find out my post helped you.
